about

The aim of the School is to contribute significantly to the

regeneration of the culture of playing traditional music in South

East Antrim.

The Committee, tutors and students of EATMS would like to express their gratitude to Newtownabbey & Larne Borough Councils together with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland for providing the opportunity to participate in Lottery Funded “The Art of Regeneration” scheme that instigated the formation of the music school. This scheme, reflecting our cultural links with Scotland and Ireland, greatly assisted the development of traditional music in East Antrim and provided a stable platform for tuition; with our expanding corps of tutors, for curriculum; through the development of our tune book and for performance through the slow sessions and our concert performances both here and abroad. This vital trinity, ably supported by our tutors and volunteers, has led to a revival in the groundswell of interest from the wider population of East Antrim and further afield in developing skills as traditional musicians. Our slow sessions have now become the envy of many and are now attended by others who get their tuition from other organisations. We welcome them all. The social as well s the cultural aspect of the slow session has allowed people from very different backgrounds to participate in our event and in particular enjoy a very social evening of music and dance in our annual Gasworks BBQ. We would also like to thank the Committee of “Flame” The Gasworks Museum for their help and co-operation in these events. Like many other culturally based organisations we are feeling the downside of the credit crunch and a tightening of government belts with an absence of funding, however we look forward to developing our activities further and we have many ambitious plans in the melting pot to ensure the continued development of the cultural life of East Antrim.
